The Cortez Files - Episode 001 - A New Leaf.
Prologue: Scene opens to an empty Sherri Parker Lee Stadium, where the wrestling ring from the recent Southern Star Wrestling event remains. A steel chair is in the middle of said ring and atop it, sits a man wearing a black t-shirt with an eagle perched atop a skull positioned in the middle, denim jeans that are held up by a chocolate brown belt that has a golden buckle and black wrestling boots. The man looks out at the stands which just three hours ago were full of cheering fans, a smile appearing across his lips.
"It's time..." the man states, a cold expression across his face. Continuing to look around at the empty seating and ramp in front of him, he glances at the ringside crew members who are waiting for him to exit the ring so that they can deconstruct it and move onto the next arena. "This is where I am most at home and this is where it all begins,"
With those words, the scene fades.
Scene 1: Scene opens to the same man that had been in the ring, now sitting atop a different chair, this one a snow-white leather one, inside of what appears to be a barren room inside of a house. Surrounded by walls that are equally white and wearing a black cotton t-shirt, black pants and black Adidas sneakers. Positioned on a black steel tripod in front of him, is a video camera. Appearing to be recording this in a fashion similar to a confessional.
"My name," the man states. "Is Leon Cortez. Yes, I am a member of the infamous Cortez family," his admission drawing a sigh from himself, he then affirms. "I'm not like my mom or Dad though. I'm not here to bring the business down as they were... I'm here to make things right. To own up to their sins and help repair the bridges they burned."
Relaxing as those words leave his mouth, he's well aware of those who know his family. Those who remember the things they did in the ring, are unlikely to take his statements at face value. He embraces that though and knows that it will be a process. That it'll take time and his actions to prove himself to truly be the "new leaf" of the family.
"For they may be family. They may be my flesh and blood but that does not mean I am bound to them. That does not mean that I am destined to forever walk in their footsteps." he comments, a focused stare in his eyes. One that shows the intensity and passion burning within his soul. "I appreciate all they have done for me, but I am not them. The things they did. The paths they chose in this industry are not the paths I plan on taking. They may have gotten my foot in the door, they will not be the ones who define my legacy. Who I am."
His eyes continue to deeply stare into the lens, a smile begins to form on his face. Leaning forward slightly, his feet press against the floor.
"I know it will be a journey. I know that people are still going to hold my name against me, and I accept that. I'm not hiding from the acts of my parents... just know that I plan on changing the heritage. the perception around our name. One step at a time." he appears to reflect on something before sitting back and remarking. "That, I promise."
Standing, he calmly strolls over to the camera, pressing the "stop" button before heading out of the room as the scene fades.
Scene 2: Scene opens to Leon, sitting in a crimson red leather one chair, not too dissimilar to the one his father sat on during his stint as the "Lord of the Ring" in the BWL. Attired in the same clothing as when he was last seen, he is in front of a black painted oak table, with two stacks of playing cards in front of him.
"Explosion," he states, the event that happens to be where he will be making his professional wrestling debut, under the banner of the IIW. "The show where it all begins. Where I take my first steps toward glory. toward becoming the wrestler that this industry deserves. The hero that my parents never were,"
He slightly smiles.
"The man who the masses can look at and see themselves in. A man who bleeds this industry. Who will do anything to become the best and uphold history. The lineage of the sport that has opened its arms to me. Just as it has for each of the two men who will be sharing the ring with me at Explosion," he pauses, pondering how best to approach the discourse he has for both men, before placing each of his hands in front of one of the stacks of cards. "El Landerson and Amadeus Fox. Two men who I know will be looking to make their own impact in this match. Looking to make sure people realize they are gifted. That they are talented and belong here in the IIW. Just as I am."
Lifting his right hand, he pulls the top card from the deck, flipping it to reveal that it is a still shot of El Landerson standing in front of a concrete wall.
"El Landerson. A man who knows the meaning of family. A man who wrestles in a similar manner to me. A man who has been here for a long time and although he has only seen fleeting success, goes out there night after night and gives the fans a show. A performance that never ceases to amaze." his smile becomes warmer and sincere in nature. "I have the utmost respect for you, El. I have watched you since your first day in the IIW and seen what you are capable of. I know that you are capable of beating anybody in that ring, even if you are seen as an underdog. I know all about your undying desire and passion to do whatever it takes to instill pride in your craft. In Lucha libre. A style that has heavily influenced me between the ropes."
Flipping the next card on the deck over, it is revealed to be an action shot of Landerson hitting his patterned 619 finisher. A move that Leon remembers asking his father to teach him when he started training.
"You are an idol for kids everywhere. I see the masks in the street. At events and their cheers whenever you set foot into the ring. I admire the fact that winning and losing doesn't waver your focus. That no matter what, you always find a way to show up with a smile and bounce back." his tone then turns more serious. "That doesn't mean that I'm going to make this match easy for you though. Just because I respect you, doesn't mean I'm going to be your friend inside of that ring."
His stare begins to match his tone, as he flips over the next card. It is one of El and his family, all standing together inside of an IIW ring.
"You should know that. Inside of that ring, we both want the same thing. We both want to show that we are the next man up. That we are the name that should be on everybody's lips once the match is said and done. We both want to make our families proud in our own ways and provide for them and we are standing in the other's way of doing so." he stares down at the cards, before looking forward. "We both crave the opportunity that this match represents, and I promise that I will step into that ring and give you the battle you deserve. A match that you will be able to be proud of, as you pass on the torch. As I take my place as the new generation of Lucha."
His smile is replaced by straightened lips as he leans forward.
"I'm not going to look past you El. That would be doing both you and I a disservice. Just know that I plan on walking out the winner. The one with their hand raised once the match is said and done. This is what I need," he rests his arms atop his lap. "This is my first step toward cementing my legacy. Toward bringing a new light upon my family and I don't plan on wasting it. Even if it is at your expense."
He laughs, reaching out before flipping the last card from the deck. Revealing it to be one of El Landerson, waiting for his opponent in the ring. This causes a smile to reappear across the second-generation wrestler's face.
"I wouldn't have this match against anybody else, El. Let's go out there and put on a show." With those words, the scene fades. Leon's face being the last thing one sees.
Scene 3: Scene opens to Leon, this time sitting atop the soft, lush grass within the open parkland of Victor Ashe Park. Attired in a black cotton hooded jacket, denim jeans and black leather boots, his legs are crossed and the other stack of cards from earlier are on the grass in front of him. Inhaling, he takes in the sights and sounds around him before deciding to focus on the task ahead.
"Amadeus Fox. The bounty hunter of wrestling as they call you," he remarks, having vaguely remembered that name from hearing it on wrestling broadcasts talking about Explosion. "A man who wishes to spread his wings beyond the scope of the family business and make his name in this industry. That is something I can respect," he takes another breath, glancing down at the cards before flipping the first one over. It is one of Amadeus standing in front of an IIW banner. "I know what it's like to subvert family expectations. To not fall into the path they wish for you to. To become your own person, even if in my case, it is simply motivation and actions. Whereas in your face, it is entering a different industry altogether."
He pauses, flipping over the second card. It is one of Amadeus, superimposed into a wrestling ring.
"Like me, you are trying to get your career started off on the right path. This is your first match in the industry, just as it is mine. We both have something to prove, and we both want it to be known that we are the future of this sport. The flag bearers who are waiting for their moment to shine."
He smirks, extending his right leg out.
"A time that will come at Explosion. The question is, how much is your heart in this, Amadeus? How far are you willing to go to get the victory?" Leon's eyes show a similar focus to when he talked about El Landerson. "Are you willing to do what it takes to prove yourself, or are you simply using this as a means to collect a paycheck and move on? "
He frowns, hoping that Amadeus isn't just here to see this sport as a bounty to collect.
"Will you be your own individual or are you going to fall into the line of your family? I want you to be honest with yourself, because Explosion will either be your opportunity to make a statement or to prove those who might see you as an affront to this industry right," he then gets more gentle but still firm. "You probably know that though. I'm sure you would have considered that when entering this industry, knowing that mercenaries aren't always seen in the best of lights. Trust me, I would know."
He then mentally recounts his father telling him a story of when he acted as a mercenary for the "Mexicana Elite" stable during his AWCW days and how it caused fans to turn on him anywhere he went. It has stuck with Leon ever since.
"That doesn't mean that I plan on taking you easy though. I know that you are dangerous. I know that you are going to see me as a bounty. As an opponent to hunt and collect upon," he raises his right hand, placing it atop the deck. "I know you're likely extremely talented between those ropes. You wouldn't be here otherwise, so I am going to give you the same respect I'm giving Landerson. I am going to go out there and give you my best. Everything I have inside of me to make this a match people remember. A match they can be proud to have seen."
Sliding the next card from the top, it reveals a holographic picture of Amadeus, this time in a boxing style of pose.
"Just know that when it is all said and done, I will be the one walking out the winner. I don't plan on messing up this opportunity or letting it slip. I have no reason to. While you and Landerson might want to make a statement. Use this as a springboard, I need this win to begin the next chapter. To truly begin turning this new leaf for my family."
He then lowers his voice to a whisper.
"It's not personal." he then returns his voice to its normal tone "It is simply what must be done."
With that, the scene fades as Leon pushes himself off the grass and to a vertical base.
Epilogue: With his first statement made, what is next for Leon? What will his opponents have to say in the build up to their triple threat at Explosion? Is Leon truly attempting to change the reputation his family holds in wrestling, or is there something nefarious under the surface?

Amadeus sits in front of a circular table, inside of his apartment. Wearing a green t-shirt, denim jeans and black cowboy boots, the bounty hunter turned wrestler looks forward. Directly into a camera that he has set up in front of himself.
Amadeus: Targets acquired. Leon Cortez and El Landerson. Two men who seemingly believe in family and making people smile. Traits that the average person would admire in this world, but also a way for them to escape from themselves. To try and find a silver lining to disguise the failure that will occur for the two of them when we step into the ring at Explosion, and they find themselves staring down the barrel of a gun. A gun that will have me as its wielder.
Amadeus laughs, his eyes narrowing.
Amadeus: They are the ones who have been assigned to me. The first men to have a bounty put on their heads. It does not matter who has called for this bounty, for I was taught not to ask questions. They have their reasons for wanting the both of you to be captured and defeated... my job is to simply carry out the commands and complete the task. Something that I, just like the rest of my family, pride ourselves on doing.
He smiles, maintaining his fixated look on the camera. Making sure that both of his targets can see how focused and prepared he is for their match.
Amadeus: Failure is not something we accept. It's not something that I will accept in this sport, because it won't just be letting myself down. It won't just be letting those who have entrusted me with the task, but also my family. It will be a black mark against our names... something that I don't plan on being. You two are fighting for yourselves. Losing to you is simply a chance to dust yourselves off and move you, not worrying about how it impacts those around you. How it affects the way you are seen in this world, as to you, this is just wrestling. This is just a match that you're in and one that you will forget the following day. It is how you operate.
He takes a deep breath.
Amadeus: That is not how it is for me. Each assignment. Each opponent sticks with me. Written down inside of my notebook once they are defeated and left on the mat to stew in their failure. Left knowing that they weren't able to outrun their destiny. Their fate, just as the criminals my family have apprehended, being sealed the moment they were placed into my line of sight. I don't let go of them. I don't just move onto the next one, because you never know when they might want revenge. When they might wish to try their hand at escaping and going for round two, refusing to accept that it will only end up being the same result then as it will be at Explosion. Them, once again, defeated and on the mat.
His lips curl upward as his eyes give a determined look.
Amadeus: If that's what you want, then I'm not going to stop you. More money and more prestige for me. Don't let that make you think I'm not serious about wrestling though, or that I'm only using it for the money. Or that you can question my intent just because in your eyes, I am some sort of mercenary. Only here to sell my services to the highest bidder. That I don't seemingly care about the business aside from what it can offer me.
He scowls, seemingly offended by that assertion.
Amadeus: That couldn't be any further from the truth. Yes, I am a bounty hunter at heart, but that does not mean you can dismiss me as not caring about wrestling. Or simply being here for money and nothing else. Do you really think I would be here if it was just about the money? Don't you think that I would have simply followed in my family's footsteps and worked for the system if that is all I wanted?
He pauses, the fire and intensity resonating from each word that he speaks. Leaning further forward, he stares right into the camera.
Amadeus: I'm here because I love this sport. I care about wrestling and see it as my way of giving back. My way of showing that I am just as capable of fighting. Of scrapping and clawing my way to the top as everybody else. A task that starts at Explosion when I step into the ring with Leon and El. You two are going to see first hand that I'm not just about money. That I'm not just about taking you down and arresting you. Or capturing your scalp in this case. I am about making sure people understand that in this business. This sport, you have to go out there and get the job done. You have to fight your way to victory, using anything that you have at your disposal. Anything you can get your hands on, because your opponent will be looking to do the same thing. Kill or be killed.
He shoots a twisted smile at the camera.
Amadeus: Something I am willing to do. Can either one of my opponents say the same? Truly? I know they'll try to say that they can, but saying something and actually doing it are two completely different things. Explosion will be where they put themselves to the test. Where they show whether they are just talking in the hopes that it will get them out of my line of sight or if they are truly ready for the hunt that awaits them. The task of trying to knock me down and avoid their destiny of being my first victims. The first to find their names in my little book.
It's then that the sounds of Amadeus's phone can be heard, and he pulls it out of his pocket. Looking downward, he notices that it is a text message from an unfamiliar number. His face contorting into a scowl, he opens it.
"Meet me at the warehouse in 30."
Putting the phone back into his pocket, he ponders the message and who it could be from, before returning his focus to the camera.
Amadeus: I hope you two can make this hunt interesting, because I want to have fun as I watch the two of you squirm. As the two of you realize that you might be able to fly, but you're going to find yourself getting a little too close to the sun... where you will crash and burn. For now, the hunt is on.
Pressing the stop button on the camera, Amadeus stands up, preparing to leave his home and head to the warehouse. -
30 minutes later, Amadeus finds himself standing inside of a warehouse. It's dingy, with the only light source being the dim glow of a lightbulb overhead. Scanning the room, he notices a shadowy figure standing in the lower right-hand corner of the room.
Amadeus: What is it that you want?
The man simply chuckles, taking a step forward and revealing that he is wearing a white shirt, jeans and brown cowboy boots, with messy blond hair.
Man: You should know what I want, Amadeus. I thought your father taught you about who I am.
This appears to strike a memory of something within the youngest Fox family member, as his look becomes stern.
Amadeus: Tobias...
The man nods.
Tobias: See, I knew you would realize who I am.
Amadeus: Yes. Dad told me you would try and get me to do your bidding. Force me to play your game, before revealing yourself to be nothing more than a snake.
Seemingly shocked at this, Tobias steps back.
Tobias: Me? A snake? No. All I want is a... business agreement. See, you and I, we can be friends. Business partners if you will. All you have to do, is find somebody and bring them to me. I'm sure you're up to the task, being a bounty hunter and all.
Amadeus looks at him, cautious as he simply exhales.
Amadeus: Who is it?
Tobias: I'll let you know in good time, sir. Are you in?
Amadeus nods.
Amadeus: Yes. I'm in.
Tobias smiles before pulling out an envelope from his jeans pocket and handing it to Amadeus.
Tobias: I'm glad we could come to an agreement. I'll be in touch soon.
With that, Tobias simply walks off, leaving Amadeus there. Staring at the envelope, he glances across the front, seeing the letters "Top secret". Placing it into his own pocket, he slowly leaves the warehouse, heading back to his apartment to finish up his preparations.
