April 8 Liverpool, England
It was the day after her match with Valkyrie Wrestling, and Kasey Vex had decided to stay in England for a few days until her next match, which would be Monday night for IIW. She had a first-round match for the vacated International Championship, and for the first time in the company’s history they were allowing intergender wrestling. The idea of being the first woman to hold a men’s title in the company intrigued her when she was contacted by Mayhem’s general manager Shaun Hart, so she decided to throw her name into the mix.
And besides, what a hell of a way to make her comeback to the company after being on the injured list.
Currently, the raven-haired wrestler was wandering around the Liverpool City Centre, her brown eyes wide as she took in the sights around her. Beside her, her long time boyfriend Shawn Warstein was trying not to laugh at her as she repeatedly kept narrowly avoiding street signs and other obstacles in her way.
“Look, I didn’t get a proper chance to explore Liverpool the last time I was here, cause I had to haul ass to Japan for Miracle Galaxy Pro,” she said, tightly crossing her arms across her chest. “Now that I actually have a few days to breathe, I wanna see the city. This place is historic!”
“I know, I know. Your enthusiasm is just adorable, that’s all.” He reached out and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “But then again, I’d rather not have to take you to the hospital because you tripped and split your head open on the sidewalk. Wouldn’t do very well for your big IIW comeback.”
“You do have a good point,” she acquiesced. They decided to stop for lunch, and settled on a fish and chips shop on the docks. As they waited on their food, Kasey scrolled through Google Maps to see what kind of attractions there were around them. “Oooo, this looks interesting. There’s a Titanic memorial just a little further up.”
“Is it a statue of Jack and Rose?” he teased. “Maybe the drawing scene?”
Kasey rolled her eyes and bumped his shoulder with her own. “You’re such a dweeb.” She looked back to her phone. “Cool, an art gallery! And a museum! Holy crap, there’s a ton of them around here, actually. Man, this city really is a hub of culture.”
Their food arrived, and they spent the next few minutes eating and discussing their next venture. Soon, all that was left in their containers were breadcrumbs and a few leftover chips, and they were getting ready to head back out.
They walked along the promenade next to the water, but for some reason Kasey kept getting the feeling that she was being watched. She tried to surreptitiously look around for any suspicious figures, but the area was full of people and she couldn’t really get a good read on anyone. Shawn noticed her looking around, and immediately went into defense mode. “Kase, what is it?”
“Nothing, just…It’s nothing.” She tried to act nonchalantly, but one look from her boyfriend of four years and she sighed. “I just had this feeling like we were being watched. Not just watched, but followed. It could have just been some overzealous fan, but…I just can’t shake the feeling in the pit of my stomach that something’s up.”
Shawn took a quick look around their surroundings, but the look on his face told her that he didn’t see anything either. “Are you sure, Kase?”
“Maybe. I dunno.” She ran a hand through her hair. “Let’s just get to the museum.”
She looped her arm through his and the couple made their way through the crowds. From a side alley, a hooded figure stepped out onto the street and watched the couple walk away, before bringing a phone to their ear. “They’re here.”

Back in her hotel room, Kasey was sitting in a chair by the window. Dressed in a casual getup of a black oversized T-shirt and multicoloured leggings, she had her legs tucked up underneath her in a criss-cross as she stared out across the lights of Liverpool. The sky was starting to darken with the approach of night, but the streets below her window were no less busy than they had been during the day. She people-watched for a few moments before she turned her attention to the camera set up in front of her.
“Well, hi there all you faithful fans of IIW! I know it’s been a hot minute since I’ve graced your screens. But I’m back, better than ever, and ready to hit the ground running! And what a better way to get back into the swing of things than by throwing my hat into a tournament to crown a new International champion. Doesn’t get much bigger than that.”
She winked towards the camera. “But it’s a bit more of a bigger deal for me. See, while I was off recouping my head injury, IIW decided that they were gonna start letting the men mix it up with the women. In the ring, that is. That’s right, we’ve gone intergender, baby! And what a huge splash it would be for the winner of the tournament to be the first ever woman to hold the International championship. Believe you me, I have no illusions that this tournament is gonna be a cakewalk. Especially since they opened it up to outside competitors as well.” Kasey let out a low whistle. “Gotta say, these brackets are looking pretty damn stacked on both sides. But I’ve never been afraid of a little hard work to get what I want, and this time is no different. Ya girl is gonna be kicking off this tournament going up against the scrappy little fighter by the name of Curtis.”
She unfolded her legs from underneath her and put her feet down on the floor, resting her elbows on her knees and leaning forward. “You seem like a nice enough kid, and I’m sure that you’re gonna do great things in wrestling. But not in this tournament.” She gave a shrug of her slender shoulders, flipping a piece of her long black hair behind her shoulder. “See, I didn’t sign up for this tournament just for kicks and giggles. Nah, this is my great comeback to the company. And what better way to come back than by kicking all the butt and becoming the new IIW International champion. Not to mention being the first woman in the company’s history to do so. See, the thing about me is, I love subverting expectations. Becoming the first woman in IIW history to win a major men’s title…well, that’s an opportunity that was just too good to pass up.”
She leaned back in her chair. “I know you may have a kind of home field advantage, with this edition of Mayhem coming live from jolly old England and all, but I’ve got fans all around the globe. I know I do here in your home country, since I just competed here a few days ago for another promotion. So I know that I’m gonna hear you all loud and proud in the IIW Arena on Monday night, cheering me on to victory and the next round of this International title tournament. So let’s get this thing going and ride it all the way to the top. See you all in Manchester.”
She threw up the peace sign and winked towards the camera, before reaching forward and covering the lens with her hand to cut the feed to black.
