Picture it the deepest, darkest reaches of the Milky Way in the 1860’s (Earth Years). Given the fact we are talking about space, little is different from how it is in the modern area aside from the absence of space stations created by humans in the 20th and 21set centuries. Asteroids and meteors are of course present along with black holes and other objects common to outer space.
Suddenly a flying saucer comes into view, the saucer seems to be having some sort of mechanical issue as it swerves across the sky in a manner similar to the way in which a drunk driver swerves all over the road. Apparently headed toward Earth, this saucer ends up in distress and crashes into a ringed planet either Saturn or Venus and we can see the explosion for miles. If there were any forms of intelligent life on this craft they are no longer living and little to no remains are likely to ever be found as whatever it may have been once upon a time is now reduced to mere ash.
Simultaneously back on earth, an elderly man named Tod Westfile and his wife Esther are sitting out on the back porch of their modest log cabin which overlooks a nearby lake. It is a clear light and the stars are very visible unlike the modern age and big city life. It goes without saying that the sounds of crickets, frogs, owls and other nightlife are rather apparent. Suddenly for whatever bizarre reason (s) Westfile and his wife are able to clearly see the flying saucer make contact with either Saturn or Venus although not as clearly as we were able to moments ago and then smoke following. Westfile is in disbelief at being able to clearly see something taking place in outer space without the use of any kind of telescope.
Westfile: What in tarnation do you suppose that was?
Esther: it seems to be the apocalypse you old heathen, you had best repent before it’s too late.
Westfile: You first woman, it’s obvious I have been drinking too much and am tired. I don’t know what your excuse is for seeing something we shouldn’t be able to see but I’m going to bed.
The two head inside presumably with Westfile hitting the hey and Esther assumably doing some reading and/or knitting.
