Kyla never saw herself as a wrestler. It wasn't something that she ever thought of when she was a child. Gymnastics was always her love. It was what she was most passionate about and the sport she envisioned herself making her name in. She was extremely gifted at it, too, managing to even make the United States National Team. Yet at the back of her mind, she knew at some point, she would eventually find herself entering the sport in some capacity. It's in her blood after all. She has become more open to it in recent times though, seeing it as a way to have fun and add to her name.
Valorie sits in her office, three hours after finishing her sparring session with her oldest daughter and finalizing the contract she signed to start her wrestling career. The second graduate of this class to do so, behind Kathryn Nicholson. Looking down at a piece of paper in front of her, she scans through the names, with one of them standing out to her in particular. That of her youngest daughter, Kyla.
There has been a surprising amount of interest in her from a variety of promotions who are lured toward her due to her natural athleticism and talent, having assumed that her lack of care and interest toward the sport would have caused them to shy away. She's thankful it hasn't though, as she wants to see Kyla in the sport, especially as she has improved in terms of her interest in recent times. In that she has actually decided to show some interest at all in the sport, even attending independent events in the area. Her thoughts are interrupted by the sound of the door opening and Kyla walking into the office, smiling.
Valorie: "Hey Kyla. I wasn't expecting to see you here. I thought I told you I was going to come over to your place for our talk?"
She nods. Valorie had texted her that she would visit Kyla for a visit in a couple of hours, but she figured she'd come to the office so that they could spend some time together.
Kyla: "You did! I just thought I'd come in and see if you wanted me to buy you anything for dinner?"
Valorie appreciates the gesture from her daughter, but declines with a shake of the head. She was planning on having a late dinner when she got back home from Kyla's and despite her workout earlier, isn't hungry presently.
Valorie: "Thanks, but I'm alright right now."
She then looks over at the folder to her right, a thought crossing her mind. A way for her to kill two birds with one stone so to speak.
Valorie: "You want to do it now? Seeing as you're here anyway."
Kyla gives her mom a smile, nodding as she wanders over to the seat. She had assumed she might ask if Kyla just wanted to get it done now, so that they don't need to worry about it later. Sitting, Valorie pulls the folder closer to her, opening it to reveal a contract. Six of them actually, but the top one is the one she thinks is the best option.
Valorie: "Give them a look. You'd be surprised how many promotions have enquired about you."
Kyla laughs. She didn't think she'd be that popular with wrestling promotions. Especially considering she has made her disinterest in the sport clear in the past, even if she has come around in recent times and sees it as an opportunity. A chance to expand her skillset and put her training to good use while still having fun.
Kyla: "Really? I shouldn't be surprised. Who wouldn't want me on their roster?"
Stopping herself, Kyla notices the glare her mom is giving her. A look that she is all too familiar with, and a way of reminding her not to be so arrogant.
Valorie: "A little humility goes a long way in this sport. Anyway, give them a look and tell me which one you're most interested in. There's no rush, but I'll give them a call and see what I can do if you tell me where you want to go."
Kyla reads through the contracts in front of her, trying to find one that at least makes her feel something toward it. While most of the contracts get a hum or a small nod, she manages to actually place her hand on the dotted line of one, sliding her hand across it. Envisioning her name being there. It was also the only one from a promotion that wasn't based in America. Mostly because it means she could potentially go global.
Valorie: "I know that look. You find one you like?"
Kyla: "Yes. The IIW, I think they're called. At least, that's what the contract says."
Valorie nods. She shouldn't have been surprised Kyla would pick them. They are international and she has always wanted to tour the world. Just, previously, she didn't think it'd be as a wrestler.
Valorie: "I thought so. They seem like a good place and I'm sure you're going to ace it. Are you sure they're your choice?"
Without a second of thinking, Kyla nods. She is already picturing herself on a global stage, mixing gymnastics and wrestling in a way that hasn't ever been seen before. A style that she has trained in the gym. Valorie makes a note of it, before closing the folder and looking her youngest right in her eyes. A jovial expression upon her face.
Valorie: "I'm glad you're giving this a shot. I've always thought you had the talent but just need to put your heart into this. I know you want to be a gymnast and I will always support you, no matter what, but I can't lie. It makes me smile you're doing this."
Kyla smiles. She knows her mom had always been secretly hoping that Kyla would join her in wrestling. The more selfish side of her was wishing that, even if overtly her tune had been the same as they are here. Yet she's okay with it, seeing as she knows all her mom has wanted is the best for her, even if they disagree on what that best is.
Kyla: "I know, mom."
Valorie laughs, knowing that she hasn't done a good job at hiding her true emotions.
Valorie: "Good. I know your aunt will be proud too when I tell her."
Kyla nods before standing. Not because of her aunt being brought up, but because it's almost 7 and she is famished. She had only intended to stop by for about five minutes, but couldn't pass up doing the contract stuff here. Now though, her stomach is screaming at her to go and get dinner.
Kyla: "You sure you don't want me to pick something up for you?"
Valorie: "Yeah. I'll probably grab a bite before I get to yours anyway. There is one thing I do want to ask you for though..."
Kyla turns around, looking at her mom with a curious look. Although she knows what it likely is, she wants to hear the words from her mouth.
Kyla: "What's that?"
Valorie: "At least try to take the IIW seriously. Or at least, tone down on your arrogance. Have fun, but at least try to give the sport respect."
Kyla's face goes blank. She knows exactly why Valorie stated that, even if she didn't mention her by name. Cassandra. Her sister. The two are the polar opposite in their approach to the sport, and her mom has always favored Cassandra, at least during training for that reason. She respects the sport, living and breathing it, whereas Kyla sees it as another way of training for gymnastics and not just for wrestling.
As much as she doesn't want people to know, it bothers her whenever it's brought up. It stings when people see her as the example to follow and try to tell Kyla to be more like her sister. They may share blood, but they are completely different people. They compete in different ways in the ring, and have different aspirations in life. Cassandra doesn't want to be Kyla and Kyla doesn't want to be Cassandra, but they know they'll always be looked at as two sides of a coin. It's just how it is when you're sisters.
Kyla: "I'll try. I'm still going to be me, but for you, I'll try to take it a little more serious."
Valorie: "I'll take it."
Kyla: "Don't think I'm going to be like Cassandra though. I'm still going to enjoy myself and give the fans a display they'll remember, but I won't just discard the sport. I won't just act like it's nothing."
Valorie has no choice but to agree to that. At least it's progress from her previous interactions in training, where Kyla would only do something if it meant she would work on her floor routine afterward. At least now, she is signing up with a wrestling promotion.
Valorie: "That's all I ask from you."
Hearing her stomach rumble, Kyla smiles before beginning to head toward the exit and her car. Knowing she needs to eat soon.
Kyla: "I'm going to go grab myself some dinner. I'm starving. See you when you get to mine. Love you."
Valorie watches as her daughter begins to walk off.
Valorie: I'll be there in an hour. Love you too."
Kyla: "Okay."
Kyla exits the office, leaving Valorie there to do the final bit of housekeeping for the center today, before calmly making her way to the exit. This mightn't have been her first choice of professions, but for her mom, she is going to give it a shot. A chance. After all, what better way to make her name than to leave an impression on the wrestling world. Perhaps, one even bigger than her mom or Cassandra.
