Prologue: Scene opens to a darkened room, where the only source of light is being emitted from a lamp in the center of the room. Its glow is only enough to reveal that it is atop a square oak table and that a male figure is seated on a chair behind it. His hands resting on the table as he stares forward. Nothing else is known about the room or where it is. The man slightly taps the table with his fingers as we pan up to reveal that he is wearing a black hood over his head, concealing his identity. A soft laughter can be heard as the man states "I've been expecting you," before the sound of a door opening can be heard and the scene slowly fade,
Scene 1: Scene re-opens to the interior of a mansion, where a male in his mid-to-late fifties can be seen, sipping a glass of Saladini Pilastri Rosso Piceno as he talks on the phone to an unknown person. He is attired in a black Armani suit and dress shoes combination; has his hair slicked back. This is Dante Alessio, Italian wrestling icon and member of the famed Alessio family empire. His net worth is assumed to be anywhere between 250-400 million dollars.
"Did you find him?" He asks the person on the other end of the line, his voice authoritative and carrying a certain level of intimidation behind it.
He slowly takes another sip of his wine, as he hears an affirmative response.
"Good. Tell him I'll be there in twenty minutes and we can talk about his future." Sternly stating, he glances across the room, before pulling the phone from his ear.
"Giovanni!" He calls out, followed by hearing the sound of footsteps as a portly man, not much younger than Giovanni enters the room, having heard his name.
"Yes boss?" The man known as Giovanni Vitale remarks as Dante motions for him to put the bottle of wine back in the fridge.
"I've got to go out and talk to Mark about his future, so make sure no funny business happens here while I'm gone, okay?" His remark flat in tone, Giovanni nods as he wanders over to the table so that he can fulfil the first part of his bosses request.
Dante then puts the phone back to his ear, as the scene slowly fades.
Scene 2: Scene returns to the room from earlier, this time with the light turned on and two men seated at the table. Revealing that they are inside a smaller but still modern house. The first man, who was initially seen here is a male who appears to be in his early twenties, wearing a white Ralph Lauren shirt, jeans and white dress shoes. Whereas the second man, who had entered the room is attired in a mint green Lacoste Polo shirt, black pants and black dress shoes. He appears to be in his mid thirties and has a gentle smile on his face.
"Your dad's been looking for you all day." The man remarks, receiving a laugh in response.
"What does he want now? He knows he can call." The first man replies, softly shaking his head as the second man simply shrugs in response.
"Said that he needed to see you in person," Is the calm reply as the first man slides forward in his seat.
"Did he say what for?" The younger man inquires, trying to press the man and extract information as to what his father could want, that he couldn't do over the phone. The older man is unwavering as he simply glares into the man's eyes.
He then slightly nods, but remembers that the father told him not to tell his son any specifics until he got there.
"Well?" The man remarks while raising his eyebrow, this time stern. Hoping that he can coax at least some information about what the topic of discussion could be.
The older man maintains his silence, before the scene fades.
Scene 3: Scene re-opens to the interior of a 2020 Ferrari GTC4, where a frustrated Dante is seen, weaving his way through traffic. The strains of "Country Roads" by John Denver softly emit from his radio. Glancing down at the dashboard clock, he sees that it's 2:35 PM. Twelve minutes after he left home and eight minutes prior to when he said he would meet with his son Mark and talk to him. Yet he is still about fifteen minutes away from Mark's house, which is situated on the outskirts of town. Taking a deep breath, he tries to calm himself and not fall into the trap of screaming of those in front of him. A task that the pained and frustrated expression on his face shows is a difficult one. Reaching with his left hand into the compartment next to his driver's seat, he pulls out his phone as he steers the car into a vacant parking spot. Scrolling through his numbers until he reaches the one he is looking for. Then pressing call.[/I
"Hey Pablo. It's Dante. I'm going to be a little late to the meeting. Traffic is hell."] His comments a portrait of his frustration, he listens as Pablo, or the man with Dante's son Mark calmly replies.
"Did you tell him I'd let him know when I get there?" He responds to what can be assumed is Pablo informing him that Mark had inquired about just why Dante wanted to meet with him and not simply call.
Dante then raises his right hand to stroke his jawline. He had specifically told Pablo not to feed Mark any information, as whatever it is he wants to talk about, he wishes to be the one to deliver the news himself. Thinking to himself, Dante looks over at the crimson red manila folder, neatly placed on top of the compartment and with "IIW" stamped in black on top of it.
"No. Tell him that it's a secret for now," His statement more like a command, Dante prepares to resume driving, as the strains of "Con te partiro" by Andrea Bocelli come through the airwaves.
The scene slowly fades as Dante pulls out of the parking spot.
Scene 4: Scene returns to Dante's residence, where Giovanni is currently mopping the vinyl kitchen floor. Making sure that it is in pristine shape for when his boss returns home. Atop the marble bench five feet behind him, the ingredients for homemade pepperoni pizza can be seen. Dough and all. Humming to himself, the butler slowly maneuvers the mop under the oven, ensuring that he removes all the built up grease and grime that has developed in the week previous as the scene fades.
Scene 5: The scene returns to the room where Mark and Pablo are, with both still sitting at the table. This time however, both men are holding four playing cards in their hands. Close enough to their chests so that it cannot be seen what specific cards they are, with both staring at one another. Passing the time until Dante is able to arrive. Neither man gave the other an inch. Three cards [7 of clubs, 4 of diamonds and Queen of Hearts] can be seen in-between them atop the table, indicating they are playing poker, with a deck about three feet to the right of the 7 of clubs.
"You in or are you folding?" Pablo asks firmly, attempting to entice a reaction out of Mark.
Mark simply stares a hole through Pablo, not buying into his strategy and remarks "I'll match," before slightly peering down at his hand while Pablo flips over the next card.
It's the 6 of clubs.
Pablo glances down at his own hand, slightly looking across at Mark who is as still as a statue. Unmoved by the card that has just been revealed. For his part, Pablo hasn't bitten either and simply places his right hand on the table, to show that he's still in. A gesture that Mark reciprocates.
Pablo then calmly and steadily flips over the last card, placing it on the table next to the 6. It's the Ace of Diamonds. Both men then glance at their hands, contemplating whether they wish to reveal their hands or cede to their opponent, both stare into the other's eyes. Gauging just how confident the other is in their hand. Attempting to obtain some kind of tell as to whether they'll go in or fold.
"I'm in," Mark is the first one to state his intent, coldly doing so, to ensure Pablo doesn't obtain a read on him.
Pablo slightly glances downward at his hand, before affirming he too is in with an 'I'm in,' before gently laying his cards on the table.
"Two of a kind," He states, not entirely confident in his hand, which contained a 6 of clubs as well as a 4 of Hearts, an Ace of Diamonds, a 3 of Diamonds and a 1 of Spades. Mark simply smiles as he places his own cards on the table.
"two pair." Mark's comment is met with a groan by Pablo, as he reveals the two 7 of Hearts in his hand, alongside the Ace of Diamonds, the Jack of Clubs and a 9 of Clubs.
Mark laughs as he stacks up his cards and quips "How many in a row is that now? Nine?"referring to the amount of times he has bested his friend/associate consecutively.
"Seven," Pablo calmly replies, slightly disappointed with himself. Sliding his cards into a pile, he places them atop the deck, followed by Mark doing the same as he tilts his head toward the window. Noticing the white paint of his father's Ferrari.
Outside of the house, Dante pulls up and pulls his keys out of the ignition, slightly peeved by the amount of traffic there was. Rimini roads are usually busy, but today it was as if there had been an unreported car crash with how people were moving like snails.
Scene 6: Scene re-opens to Giovanni, now inside of his bosses office, and notices a small, black USB drive. Sitting by itself atop the table to the right hand side of Dante's computer. Remembering that Dante told him specifically not to move it, Giovanni simply nods before walking across to the freshly painted sulfur walls and ensuring that they are still as spotless as they were when he last checked on them. He knows what Dante is like when it comes to any damage within the home. The scene then once again slowly fades.
Scene 7: Scene returns to Mark's house, where Pablo, Dante and Mark are sitting around the table. The manila folder Dante had in his car placed in the center of the table as father and son look at once another. A gentle, warm smile across the face of the elder Alessio.
"Yes, I told Pablo to keep it a secret," His remark indicating that he already knew about Mark asking about the topic to Pablo earlier.
Mark simply nods.
"I wanted to be the one to tell you myself about this, seeing as I feel you're ready to take the next step in your career. Branch out and expand your horizons." Smiling with pride, Dante reaches out with his right hand and slightly pushes the folder in the direction of his son. Hoping that he will be as ecstatic at the offer as Dante was when he read it.
"So, what is it exactly?" Mark queries, looking down at the IIW stamp. He's somewhat smiling, but confused about the contents of the folder at the same time.
Dante exhales, before remarking "It's a contract from a wrestling promotion based in England. The IIW," as his son slowly opens the folder, seeing the sheet of paper within.
"So, they want me to sign with them?" Mark softly comments, glancing down at the details laid out in front of him. Much like Dante had done earlier in the day, when the contract was mailed through.
"Yes. They also said that they will be entering you into a tournament to crown their inaugural International Champion if you sign up." Dante comments as Mark scans through the contents of the contract. His face remaining stoic and calm throughout.
Pablo then glances down at the contract, attempting to read it for himself, seeing as like Mark, this is his first time learning about the details. All he had known prior is what Dante had told him about having something important to show his son, prior to sending Pablo to find out if he was home. Though judging by the smile Mark gives when he peers up from the contract, it must be a good deal. Or at the very least, one that contains some favorable clauses.
"Everything okay with you?" Dante questions softly.
Mark looks across at his father and calmly replies "Yes," as Dante reaches into the pocket of his; pulls out a blue pen that he slides across to his son.
Narrowly preventing the pen from sliding off the table, Mark picks it up with his right-hand; swiftly signs his name on the contract before placing the pen back down on the table. Dante then reaches out with his right hand; gently slides the contract over to his side of the table, closing the folder.
"I'll call Mattias and see if he can have a plane ready to fly out by tomorrow afternoon." Dante dryly states, much to the pleasure of his son. He then continues with"I'll call you tonight with the exact details; you can drive out to the airport in the morning," as Mark nods, understanding the arrangement.
"I'm proud of you, son. I know how hard you've worked for this moment. You deserve this." Mark beams upon hearing those words, as Dante reaches out; gently places his right hand atop his son's left.
"Thanks." He utters in response, looking over to Pablo, who gently nods his head. Agreeing with the sentiment of his father. To them, this is a symbol of how far Mark has come since his first day in the IAWA factory.
"Just don't forget your gear this time, all right?" Pablo friendly remarks, causing Mark to remember that first day, when he had to borrow some of his father's wrestling gear because he forgot his own. The three of them then share a laugh at that moment, as well as the embarrassment on the then 16-year-old face of Mark..
"I won't." Mark replies gently before sliding his chair back as his father and Pablo do the same. Dante makes sure to grab the manila folder containing the contract as he does. He promised Osh Vaughn he would send him the signed copy in the morning. Both he and Pablo then stand up, preparing to leave and head back to Dante's.
"Bye, Mark."
"Ciao."
"Bye dad. Bye Pablo."
After exchanging their goodbyes, Dante and Pablo walk in single file [Dante in front, Pablo behind] as they make their way toward the front door as the scene slowly fades.
Scene 8: Scene opens to Mark, sitting alone atop his jet black tuxedo sofa. Deeply considering his impending move to the IIW; the chance he has been given to make his name on a wider, global stage. Glancing forward, he thinks back to his very first match in the IAWA, against Mauricio Di Santo. A match where he was still green in the ring and got defeated in six minutes. He then starts to think about when he one the IAWA Italian championship off Jason Caffese; how proud he was in that moment. Pride only matched by the feeling he received when his dad told him that he deserved the call from IIW.
"The road has just begun. Now, it's up to me to prove my dad. To prove myself right; show IIW just what I am capable of." His words are gentle, he leans back. Slightly closing his eyes as he is deep in thought about his first ever kickboxing match How much it taught him about making sure every strike matters. An approach he takes into the ring each and every bout.
He then thinks back to that IAWA title win. How exhilarating it was to hold that belt above his head. How happy it made him to look out to the fans and say that he was a champion. A pleasure that he hopes to replicate in the IIW. Especially as he has been confirmed to be part of their international title tournament. Re-opening his eyes, Mark slides his back up the couch about two inches.
"That starts with the International tournament. A chance for me to show that I'm more than just another name. An opportunity to prove that I'm not simply here because of my father's name; whether they like it or not, they will learn why I am the real deal between the ropes." His voice assertive, it's clear that he doesn't want people to have any misconceptions. Yes, his father is a multi-millionaire, but he does not need to ride on him, or his family's name in order to become a success. Anyone who thinks otherwise is insulting him.
Rising up, Mark begins to make his way clockwise around the couch, headed into his hall as the scene fades to black.
Epilogue: Tomorrow, he begins his IIW adventure in earnest, when he flies into England; acclimatizes himself with the conditions; his future opponents. The first chapter is a blank slate; a way for him to make a lasting first impression on a company that only knows of his tapes. A fanbase who are as foreign to him, as he is to them. What impression does he have in store?
