A radio plays loudly, echoing against thin drywall as “La rebellion” by Joe Arroyo plays through a constant static reception. Seated upon a worn-down bench, a young boy investigates a mirror, flexing his muscles as a large man walks across the room behind him. Still sporting what could only be described as his “mean” face, the young boy grits his teeth and speaks with a high-pitched growl. “Check it out, Dad.”
Dad Kincaid - Laughing, the man approaches the boy and pats him on the head with a large hand. The boy’s head bounces slightly under the weight as the man chuckles. “Sebastian… Do you want to be my new tag team partner? You look like you are ring ready right now!”
Young SBK- Tag Team partner? I love you, dad, but I am thinking more along the lines of being a World Champion someday! I just need to work on my muscles a bit… or a lot.”
Still laughing, the dad returns to the back of the room. He opens a large set of lockers, removing a gym bag shortly after. Perspiration drips from his forehead and chest as he wipes himself off with a stained white towel.
Dad Kincaid- World Champion? That is a big dream, Sebastian. Just remember, championship belts do not earn you respect. Your actions do, both inside and outside of that ring. Titles come and go. Respect never does.
Rising to his feet, SBK walks over to a set of dumbbells. He tries to pick one up but thinks better of it, placing it back unto the tile floor.
Young SBK- Do you think that I have what it takes to do what you do one day?”
Dad Kincaid- It depends. Wrestling is more than lifting weights and bouncing around the ring. It is mental. People will try to get in your head and hurt you. When you are strong in mind and in the heart… you will be ready if that is what you wish to do with your life. As a matter of fact, I know someone who lives by that advice. He is here if you want to speak to him about your thoughts?”
Young SBK- Is he a champion?”
Dad Kincaid- There you go again with that championship obsession. As a matter of fact, he is. Some say that he will be considered the greatest champion of all time one day too. His room is across the hallway. I am sure that he would love to speak to you! I must hit the showers and get out of my ring gear. Find me in about 15 minutes? Oh. and be respectful.
Smiling, the young boy heads out of the locker room and proceeds into a hallway. Checkered carpeted floors lead him towards another doorway. He knocks hard upon the door, partially out of excitement though he did it harder than he had intended. A voice inside the room yells out, “Come in!”
Smiling, young SBK enters another locker room. This one is smaller than the one he had been in previously. Various tables are placed around the room with stacks of letters and flowers upon them from the fans. Hanging from a hook is the Luchador Undisputed Championship. Sebastian's face beams with excitement as he approaches the belt, daring to touch it. Behind him, the same voice speaks as SBK reaches out with one finger. “
Unknown man- Go ahead, kid. Look at it.”
Spinning around, smiles. “
Young SBK- I… I am sorry. My dad told me to come to see you. I am Sebastian Kincaid Danny Kincaid’s son.
Unknown man- Oh… Danny's son?” Smiles the man as he finds a seat. “Your Dad is a good man and one of the best around. Make yourself at home.
Young SBK- I can’t believe that I am talking to Rey Mysterio.”
SBK walks towards a chair. “
Young SBK- My dad says that you are going to be the greatest champion of all time one day!”
Rey laughs softly as he ties the laces on his boots. “
Rey- Greatest? That is a big compliment. I do not bother too much with worrying over those things, though. That is for my son to decide one day. My job is just to go out to that ring and do the best that I can to give those fans something to cheer over.
Rey stands back up and walks towards the Undisputed Championship, picking it up. He then hands it to SBK, only to find his way towards a small refrigerator after.
Rey- So what did you want to ask?”
SBK eyes look down at the huge title belt before him, letting the leather straps drape over his legs.
Young SBK- My Dad says that I should talk to you about what it takes to be a wrestler.
Rey- You want to follow in his footsteps, ey?”
Rey smiles as he sits down, a bottle of water in hand.
Rey- He could do a far better job of explaining that than I could. He has been in the business for over twenty years! Honestly, kid, if I were to offer any advice, it would be to remember who you are. When you step into that ring and achieve any degree of success, people will flock to you. Some will hate you. Do not try to please them. Stay the course, remember that you are part of something greater than you, and things will fall into place. Tell YOUR story. That is, it.”
Sebastian nods.
Rey-So, let us assume that you are going to be pretty impressive as well. You are going to be the next generation star. You will be a Champion. The El Champion of Wrestling. What do you think?”
SBK nods his head quickly. “I love it! EL Champion!
Rey - You get what you put in with this business. Consistency is everything. There will be times that you want to give up. Stay the course. Wins and losses will always matter but not as much as telling your story. Be your fan, and others will take notice of you. Do not expect anyone to hand you a free lunch either. Got it?
Young SBK- Thank you, Rey
As SBK looks at the door. His dad smiles back at him.
Rey- Thanks for visiting… EL Champion.
Sebastian rushes to his Dad with a large smile on his face. The two of them walk away and head back into the locker room. Still smiling, Sebastian speaks. “
Young SBK- Rey is awesome, Dad! I hope to be just as good as him when I get older. I am going to tell MY story. I'm going to be EL Champion of wrestling!
Dad Kincaid- That’s the best thing that I have heard all day.”
They both smile as the two walks away, and the scene fades out dark.
